CNN —Beyoncé’s new song “Texas Hold ‘Em” debuted in the top spot of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart on Tuesday, the publication announced. Beyoncé’s other new country song “16 Carriages” ranks No. She is also the first woman to have topped both the Hot Country and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts since the lists began in 1958. Morgan Wallen, Justin Bieber, Billy Ray Cyrus and Ray Charles are the only other artists to have reached No. Both “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em” were released on Feb. 11 after Beyoncé teased the release of new music in a surprise Super Bowl ad for Verizon, accompanied with eye-popping visualizer videos on YouTube.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Beyoncé is back with two new country tracks — “Texas Hold 'Em” and “16 Carriages.”After a Verizon commercial starring Beyoncé aired during the Super Bowl ended with the superstar saying “They ready, drop the new music,” the question became — was she serious? Later, a cryptic Instagram video with country iconography appeared on her page, teasing “act ii” on March 29. (Beyoncé’s 2022 album “Renaissance” is frequently referred to as “Act I: Renaissance.”)At the end of the clip, a plucky acoustic guitar riff plays, and Bey’s unmistakable voice kicks in. She sings, “This ain’t Texas / Ain’t no hold ’em / So lay your cards down down down,” in a Southern twang. Under the “music” tab, two titles were listed — “Texas Hold 'Em” and “16 Carriages,” which later appeared as full songs on Tidal, YouTube and Spotify.

So it was surprising that the end of Sunday night’s season premiere of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — look out, spoilers coming — took pretty, pretty, pretty clear aim at the major voting law Georgia passed in 2021. Larry David, who as the show’s curmudgeonly star is better known for breaking social norms than actual laws, travels to Atlanta in the episode. “Sir, in the navy blazer, put your hands in the air,” an officer says to a confused Mr. David. In another episode, the cantankerous Mr. David realizes that wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat around liberal Los Angeles gets him out of many unwanted meetings and interactions. In an interview with TheWrap, one of the show’s executive producers said that its writing team had decided to somehow incorporate the Georgia law back when it passed two years ago.

Some within the party have complained that Harris is endangering the odds for victory at the ballot box this year. Happily, the Biden campaign seems to finally be coming around and embracing smart ways to make the best use of Harris’ talents and impressive resume. Her outreach will be particularly important among young voters. Harris’ portfolio of reproductive rights, voting rights and discrimination in education is tailor-made to appeal to this cadre of voters. The 2020 ticket of Biden and Harris stemmed the reclamation and retribution movement of Trumpism.

Gail Collins: Bret, I know you’re busy writing about your reporting trip to Israel, and I am looking forward to reading all your thoughts. (I guess that’s another definition for the term “manspreading.”) On the economy, voters prefer Trump over Biden by a 22-point margin. And a whopping 71 percent think Biden is too old to be president, as opposed to just 39 percent for Trump. As a matter of law, I think Trump belongs in jail. Gail: I know Trump appears more energetic, but he’s really only a whole lot louder.

Hopefully, Democratic leaders in the Senate will do the right thing, and this column will be obsolete by the time you read it. Every other Democratic senator — especially the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer — should join them. (Menendez knows this as well as anyone, having been charged with corruption once before but spared by a hung jury.) While he is entitled to another fair trial, he is not entitled to a seat in the United States Senate. Republicans, of course, understand that his presence in the Senate works to their advantage, which is why the right-wing senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas declared that Menendez should stay put.

REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueWASHINGTON, March 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden made an observation when conferring the National Medal of Arts on rocker Bruce Springsteen on Tuesday: "Bruce, some people are just born to run, man." Springsteen and a host of actors, authors, singers and other artists joined Biden in the White House East Room where they received either a National Medal of Arts or National Humanities Medal for their contributions to American society. Comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whose "Veep" show made light of the vice presidency - an office Biden once held - was also honored. Actress Mindy Kaling, a main character on the long-running television show, "The Office," set in Biden's hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, received a medal as well. "I'm trying to go back to back myself," said Biden, who has said he intends to run for re-election in 2024.
In an email to employees on Wednesday, Verily CEO Stephen Gillett said the company will lay off 15% of its staff in a restructuring move, as it strives for financial independence from parent company Alphabet . Verily, which specializes in health sciences, is one of Google's sister companies, operating within Alphabet’s "Other Bets" category. It's the first known layoff to hit the Google parent company following a wave of industry layoffs and fears of a recession. Gillett’s note stated that it will be "reducing or sunsetting" some parts of the business while increasing investment in others. Those who work out of the U.S. will hear from their business leaders on Wednesday or Thursday, the note stated.
And while this shouldn't bother banks — they make plenty of money doing what they do best — this is Wall Street. In fact, the face of Wall Street, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, literally declared war on fintechs on an earnings call in 2021. But, as Insider's Bianca Chan and Reed Alexander recently outlined in a fantastic feature, banks' bid to topple fintechs is hopeless. Whether it's JPMorgan's digital-only bank Finn or, more recently, Goldman Sachs' Marcus, banks' attempt to cosplay as fintechs rarely ends well. Click here to read more about why banks are doomed to keep failing in their fight against fintechs.

Zach Woods, 38, is an actor, comedian and writer best known for his roles in “The Office,” “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.” He currently co-stars in season 2 of HBO’s comedy series “Avenue 5.” He spoke with Marc Myers. I was a high-strung kid. I had OCD—obsessive-compulsive disorder—but my anxieties didn’t present outwardly. The fact that I didn’t seem anxious probably made things easier, but inside I was a gangly Chicken Little.
“Hocus Pocus 2” should benefit from that dynamic, delivering a breezy sequel – 29 years later – that should provide go-down-easy Halloween viewing for families in the less-demanding confines of Disney+. Then again, this kind of movie hardly needs to reinvent the cauldron, representing more of a cut-and-paste job. While the not-too-scary hijinks are acceptable for kids, those scenes will likely deliver more of a kick for parents who caught the movie way back when, helping turn it into a Halloween favorite. By that measure, “Hocus Pocus 2” finds what amounts to the streaming sweet spot, feeling just big enough, but not too big. “Hocus Pocus 2” premieres September 30 on Disney+.
"Veep" alumna Julia Louis-Dreyfus calls on suburban women to join the abortion rights fight. The "Great Troublemaker Turnout" campaign intends to stir up voters in four battleground states. The current targets include Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. "Red Wine and Blue needs you for the great troublemaker turnout," the former "Veep" star says in a recruiting video she posted online. Red Wine and Blue did not immediately respond to a request for comment about other celebrities who might be involved in the troublemaker turnout program.
